Holland America Line's "Flagship of Excellence," the ms Rotterdam, the sixth Holland America ship to bear the name, made her grand entrance into the cruising world in 1997. The Rotterdam is 62,000 gross tons, 780 feet long and carries 1,316 passengers and a crew of 644. The ms Rotterdam reflects a graceful combination of classic and state-of-the-art features. She exhibits woods and deep, vibrant colors for a traditional ship feel, while breaking new ground with unique elements, such as a Concierge Deck for suite guests and a children's play lounge. The Rotterdam's top cruising speed is 25 knots, which is 25 percent faster than today's average ship. The gain in speed provides greater itinerary range and flexibility. The Rotterdam's speed permits more and longer port calls on grand voyages, the primary cruising function of the flagship. A $2 million collection of art and artifacts is showcased throughout the ship. The Rotterdam offers an entire deck of suites with verandahs. In addition to four penthouse suites, the ship has 36 full verandah suites. The Neptune Lounge, offering personalized concierge services, is available to suite guests. The Rotterdam's 120 mini suites also feature a full verandah and many of the conveniences of the suites, such as a whirlpool bathtub, mini-bar, VCR and refrigerator.
