Guests sailing on board the 33,930-gross-ton ms Nieuw Amsterdam will find the ship combines the luxury of a resort hotel with state-of-the-art onboard technology. The 704-foot-long Nieuw Amsterdam, launched in 1983, is the third Holland America Line ship to bear the name. The 1,214-passenger ship has a staff of 542, with Dutch officers and Indonesian and Filipino crew. The Nieuw Amsterdam carries a $2 million collection of art and artifacts related to the exploration of the New World. The Nieuw Amsterdam features 20 mini suites, each offering a sitting area, refrigerator and additional sofa bed. Each spacious stateroom is equipped with individually controlled air conditioning, telephone with computerized wakeup service, multi-channel music system and closed-circuit television. Also, four staterooms have been equipped to accommodate physically challenged guests.
